Any Indian above the vindhya’s when they land in Chennai always ask why is it that local FM channels (Radio Mirchi 98.3, Radio City 105.0, Suryan FM 93.5) dont play Hindi music basically Bollywood songs.
Why should these channels play Bollywood songs. Bollywood songs are needed to play in cities where there exists no acclaimed film industry. But in Chennai the center for Kollywood where is the need for other industry songs.
This is one film industry which brought out the talent in great music directors like Ilayaraja and AR Rehman. Ilayaraja though is lying low after entry of AR Rehman, his songs composed in 80’s are still a melody to the ears.
Ilayaraja is the only Asian to have performed symphony in Royal Phiharmonic Orchestra. His some songs do have influence of Mozart and Beethoven and Sound of Music but his pieces are gems to say. More can be read in the wiki page.
AR Rehman is another prodigy I should say. He has of course for some movies composed music which are not upto mark. But most of his music captivates the audience.
He like Ilayaraja is also credited for bringing up lot of new talented singers who otherwise might have gone unnoticed. More can be read on the wiki page and the web site created by Sony.
Probably listening to Bollywood has corrupted the ears so much that appreciation for music is never found among the public. You got to listen to music composed by Ilayaraja and AR Rehman and if you have a taste for music you would definitely not long for Bollywood music. To know where bollywood gets inspired from, head here.
Ask any Chennaite of older days, he can definitely talk at length about RD Burman, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi. But todays bollywood is all but can be safely ignored.
Every Chennaite definitely listens to Hindi and English music but would not love that to be played all through the day. He needs soothing music for ears. Basically he needs music!!
